It was a real treat watching demonstrations in oil, acrylic and charcoal by great local artists who happen to also be talented  instructors. They were gracious in answering my questions about the materials they used. While working, they spoke about their techniques and decision processes. It was very informative, friendly and interesting.

Scott Yeskel talked about his color choices while working on his cityscapes in acrylics. His bold palette, ample brush strokes and nicely proportioned layout grabbed and held your attention.

Kenny Harris wielded both brush and palette knife on his oil painting of an interior. A nice variety of grays graced his palette. I would recognize that rendering of  a floor shine anywhere.

Gary Blackwell had already completed his demonstration of a landscape by the time I strolled over to his easel. I hope to have the opportunity to attend his demonstration at the next Demo Day. His palette and style is reminiscent of the California Impressionists of the early 20th century.

Cheryl Kline demonstrated her oil painting portrait style, sharing valuable information about varnishes. Beautiful skin tones and fabric textures.

Brianna Lee walked us through how she sets up a charcoal drawing on a toned ground, sharing the media she prefers, the difference between form shadows and cast shadows, how she layers her tones from dark to light, and her preference for blending with old paint brushes over tortillons.

Thanks to Cheryl Kline, owner of Kline Academy of Fine Art for hosting this event at her lovely Los Angeles studio and school. The gourmet hors d’oeuvres were a nice touch, too. I look forward to the next Demo Day and sharing what I learned with my art students.
