Chores were done. Administrative work was done. Time for a Daycation with the hubby! Despite the heatwave, Barry Wehrli and I made the drive to Pepperdine University yesterday to see the much awaited California Art Club exhibit, On Location in Malibu at the lovely Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art.
I first learned of the artshow from a flyer mailed to Pastimes for a Lifetime, (For readers new to the blog, Pastimes for a Lifetime is the name of my art and piano school and studio located in Valley Glen, CA.)
The exhibit runs from Saturday, May 19, through Sunday, July 29. With the student piano concert in May and my guest teaching gig at the Summer Art Academy in June, the only available time for us to visit was on Friday, July 6.
This was Barry and my second visit to the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art. We love the navigatable size and layout of the gallery and friendly staff. Visiting on a Friday afternoon pretty much guaranteed we would have the place to ourselves, which we did. Unlike LACMA and the Getty where I constantly annoy the guards from wanting to study paintings too closely for their strict rules, the Weisman is truly guest-friendly. I was able to get up close and personal to the paintings in order to study brush strokes and palettes to my heart’s content. Bliss!
I’m pleased to share with you the paintings out of the 70 on display that spoke to me, along with close-ups for your enjoyment and my students’ education. I encourage my readers to look beyond the image and see the craftsmanship of brushstrokes and color choices, especially in the shadows and reflections. The 1890s had John Singer Sargent, Anders Zørn and Joaquín Sorolla. Our era is lucky to have master painters such as Alexey Steele, Jeremy Lipking, Calvin Liang and the other notable California artists featured in this gorgeous exhibit.
I hope the images of the cool Pacific ocean transported you out from under the oppressive heatwave. The exhibit is up until July 29, 2018. I encourage my readers and students to make time to visit these remarkable works in person. It was a memorable experience. #worththedrive

A very well done web page of a prolific number of very impressive paintings of the Pacific Ocean scene, in my opinion. I can just smell the salt air and hear the rushing waves, while wading in the cold water along the beach. (I avoid the undertow)
Thank you so much! Nice image you painted with your words.
Loved the close ups! Thanks for sharing…time to head to Malibu!
I’m so glad. My pleasure. You’ll love it! Would love to see your photos, too.
During my years at Pepperdine the Weisman was one of my favorite haunts on campus. Michael Zakian and his crew put together some fantastic shows. Thanks for this reminder to head to the ‘bu to see this show!
Wonderful and breath taking. The seascapes were enchanting.
