As an aspiring professional artist, I am a firm believer that art can change lives and bring people together to fight for a good cause. Saturday night at Arena 1 Gallery at the Santa Monica Art Studios was living proof! I was honored to have my charcoal drawing displayed for the global leader in type 1 diabetes research, JDRF OneArt: Artists for a Cure. The event was held on Saturday, February 4 from 6-8pm. Featured artists included: Shepard Fairey, Timothy Nolan, Nancy Baker Cahill, and Frank Gehry. Here is the full list of exhibiting artists.
Guests mingled, browsed, and purchased artwork from established and emerging artists while enjoying a fun evening of drinks, delicious hors d’oeuvres by Charcoal Venice, and DJ’d music. OneArt was chaired by KTLA Morning News and all proceeds went directly to JDRF.
JDRF works every day to change the reality of this disease for millions of people—and to prevent anyone else from ever knowing it—by funding research, advocating for government support of research and new therapies, ensuring new therapies come to market and connecting and engaging the T1D community. Founded by parents determined to find a cure for their children with T1D, JDRF expanded through grassroots fundraising and advocacy efforts to become a powerhouse in the scientific community with more than 100 U.S. locations and six international affiliates. We’ve funded more than $2 billion in research to date and made significant progress in understanding and fighting the disease. We must keep up the pace of funding so progress doesn’t slow or stop entirely. ~ JDRF
I will gladly be donating more artwork in the future to their gallery events. Find out more about this wonderful non-profit here!

Thank you so much, Jessica, for including my charcoal painting among the pieces you posted from this uplifting art event! To me, JDRF is a most worthwhile cause, and contributing a piece of art to their inaugural OneArt show and sale was a dream come true. It’s gratifying to see my piece, the charcoal head study I call “Strength of Forward Vision” receive some notice, and I sincerely hope she finds or found her way to someone who will love and enjoy this image of feminine strength and grace. -Sandy M.
