As an aspiring charcoal artist, it was a dream and privilege to meet and study under the amazingly talented Casey Baugh. His work can be described as narrative impressionistic realism. Specializing in oil paint and charcoal, he began painting at the age of 13 and began selling professionally at age 17. When he was only 21 years old, Baugh began showing in galleries he had his first solo show at age 25. He is represented by Arcadia Contemporary Gallery.

The Charcoal Workshop was held on Monday, February 1, 2016 in a beautiful, airy photography studio in Downtown Los Angeles.

For the first half of the day, Casey explained the importance of seeing value, as well as composition theory and design. Casey explained the significance of photographing the subject and editing the image using Photo Shop (or a similar software) to make the photo look as closely like the desired final drawing. This makes the drawing process easier. A professional model was photographed and Casey edited the final image to his liking, adjusting the contrast and tones.

Once the perfect photograph was chosen and edited, the magic began! I had to pinch myself, as I was sitting directly behind the genius at work. Students observed and asked questions throughout his drawing session. As Casey worked his magic, he explained his charcoal drawing portrait process. Having studied privately for 4 years under educator, painter, and author, Richard Schmid, Casey provided masterful techniques, such as spraying acetone on the background to provide a wet, dreamy look.

About 2 hours later, the masterpiece was complete! If you are interested in attending one of Casey’s workshops, information can be found on his website. As an aspiring professional artist, Monday was such an exhilarating day that I will truly cherish forever. Thank you, Casey!
