Pastimes for a Lifetime had the privilege of demonstrating “The Geometry of Art” at the Media City Center Barnes & Noble book store this afternoon at their first annual Mini Maker Faire.

Maker Faires are independently produced celebrations of local maker culture. Maker Faires create opportunities for conversations with Makers. Tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and entrepreneurs all come together to show their projects and to talk about what they have learned. It is a community-based learning event that inspires everyone to become a maker, and connect with people and projects in their local community. They are fun, engaging, and exciting.

A few weeks ago, longtime art student, Ms. Diane Sands approached founder/instructor, Linda Wehrli asking if she would consider crafting a workshop linking art with math or science. That was a natural fit since Linda’s Drawing with Graphite 101 Course curriculum begins with the subject of Geometry.

Armed with drawing paper, graphite pencils, kneaded erasers and selected pages from her Drawing with Graphite 101 Project Booklet, Linda presented a workshop to kids and their families, introducing them to the concepts of how muscle memory is used in drawing, and how drawing is the measurement of both positive and negative space. Students got to keep their project booklets and drawings.

Linda’s young art student, Miss Avery Harrison dropped by to help with the presentation. It was a treat having her there.

“The guests were polite, eager to learn and engaged with their projects. It was a pleasure to present, and if Barnes & Noble continues the tradition, I’m on board for the next one,” says Linda.
