Art Scene :: Night of a 1000 Drawings Los Angeles
About two weeks ago, my boss, Linda Wehrli received an email from her longtime former art student, Jenise Jaquez-Ramos, about a unique event in which the school’s art students could participate: The Miyamoto Global Disaster Relief International Fundraising Event, Night of a 1000 Drawings Los Angeles!
Mrs. Jaquez-Ramos’ husband, Mr. Eric Ramos is a Senior Associate for Miyamoto International. Although he was not directly involved in creating this event, he attended and volunteered that evening. Ms. Sabine Kast is the Director for Miyamoto Relief and is the one who has spearheaded this fundraising event, along with Calley Bilgram, Program Coordinator, and Miss Ani Mishigian, Eric’s Administrative Assistant.
For those who might not know, Miyamoto Global Disaster Relief International is a non-profit organization that uses earthquake strategies and high-performance engineering to impact economies and save lives. Night of 1000 Drawings is a community fundraising initiative that asked everyone in L.A. to ‘doodle for a difference’ – draw anything, with anything, on anything 6 x 8. All donated doodles were exhibited at a one-night-only art exhibition and sale on Thursday, March 22, 2018, from 5-8pm, at the Globe Theatre. All attendees chose a doodle to take home and were entertained by award-winning musicians. Proceeds went directly towards funding a music program for Metro Charter Elementary!
Linda Wehrli invited her students to participate by creating and donating drawings and doodles for the event. Ani Mishigian from Miyamoto graciously took the time to drop off the official art donation box to Pastimes’ studio on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, and picked up the donation box filled with donated student artwork on Tuesday, March 20, 2018.
Pastimes for a Lifetime’s students and a parent of a student, who graciously donated their Doodles for this worthy cause are:
Malakai O., Talia A., Alexander V., Jonathon B., Naomi M., Anahit S., Abby A., Liam B., Andrés Luis M., Lauren M., Ariel S., Melisssa M., Charlotte H., Jazmine L., Erika B., Hugo T., Evie L., Sophia (Atom) H., Nihal D., Taylor V., Deborah B., Diane S., Barbara R., Anita W., and Gayle W.
Pastimes for a Lifetime donated two 1-hour Intro to Drawing Gift Certificates to their Silent Auction.
Upon arriving, attendees meandered through the lovely theater to pick out their doodle of choice, which all were beautifully displayed in the center. Thankfully, the event staff was kind enough to group Pastimes’ doodles together. Since I arrived right at 5 pm, I had first dibs on my doodle! I chose a pen sketch of Grand Central Market by artist, Alán Ramiro Manning. The event was a huge success, with 2,000 donated drawings! Pastimes will definitely be participating next year. Art, music, & fun, and all for a good cause. What more could you ask for?!
